What is HHC?

With over 100 cannabinoids in marijuana, it’s no wonder different variations of these are being discovered and enjoyed for their unique effects. Some of the most popular are the minimally psychoactive ones, with HHC (hexahydocannabinol) being one of them. While compounds like CBD have no psychoactive effects, other cannabinoids like delta-8, delta-10, and HHC provide a very mild cerebral high.

Our upcoming OOZEX HHC blend features all of the rising stars of cannabinoids, so let’s talk about what makes HHC so special.

What is HHC?

A small chalkboard in the lower right corner says HHC Hexahydrocannabinol with the chemical structure. To the left, two tincture bottles and two 510 cartridges lay on a white background.

HHC is a hydrogenated version of naturally occurring cannabinoids in hemp. It was first discovered in 1944 by an organic chemist named Roger Adams (who, by the way, also discovered THC and CBD, nbd). He added hydrogen molecules to delta-9 THC, the most common and potent form of THC, to create a more subtle high. Some of its most notable effects are pain relief and motivation.

Is HHC legal?

Cannabis remains illegal on a federal level, meaning it’s considered a controlled substance, but technically, hemp is not. HHC is derived from hemp, just like delta-8 and CBD, so it has the same complicated legality.

Technically speaking, though, HHC is legal in all states that have not enacted restrictions. This basically means there are no specific laws regarding HHC, but certain states have caught on to the loophole and restricted them. The trend seems to be states that already have some sort of legal cannabis market are the ones enacting restrictions: AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, IA, ID, MI, MS, MT, NV, NY, RI, UT, VT, and WA.

What’s the difference between HHC and other cannabinoids?

All of these different compounds can start to get confusing, so let’s break it down. For a long time, we’ve thought of two cannabinoids only: CBD and THC, or the compound delta-9. Delta-9 continues to be the psychoactive ingredient in most cannabis products, like oils and tinctures, on the market. Or, for those looking for a completely non-psychoactive way to ease stress and body pain, CBD products are the way to go. However, neither of these are federally legal since they’re derived from marijuana. The one caveat is if the CBD is hemp-derived, and more specifically, from a hemp plant containing less than 0.3% THC.

Now, there are cannabinoids entering the market that are considered legal and even available for online ordering. That’s because these are derived from federally legal hemp, not marijuana, which has a higher percentage of THC. Besides HHC, these include delta-8 THC, delta-10 THC, THC-P and THC-O, or delta-O.

Delta-8 is considered a “weed light,” with mild psychoactive effects, one step down from delta-9 THC. HHC and delta-10 have been reported to provide even less intoxication. However, all of these compounds have proven to alleviate pain, insomnia and anxiety, with a very mild high. On the other hand, THC-O is about three times as potent as delta-9 THC, even though it’s also derived from hemp. Because of this, it’s still just as legal as delta-8, delta-10, or HHC.

Here’s a little more context on the effects of HHC in comparison to the other major cannabinoid players. On a scale of least potent cannabinoids (so far) to most potent, it’s CBD, HHC, THC-P, delta-8 THC, delta-9 THC, and finally, THC-O.

That’s why we love HHC: it’s high is very subtle but it gives that boost of motivation you just need sometimes. Be on the lookout for our 2g HHC blend vaporizers featuring delta-8, delta-10 and THC-O, available in retailers across the country!
